Monochloroacetic acid (MCA) 25g – a very strong keratolytic agent used as an acidic topical medicine by podiatrists and dermatologists for decades, which when applied to skin, softens keratin, helping loosen and assist exfoliation of skin cells whilst helping skin bind moisture. A powerful irritant which should be administered by experienced health-care professionals only – monochloroacetic acid is used as an effective alternative for successfully treating persistent cutaneous (common and plantar) warts when salicylic acid and cryotherapy treatments have failed. Also useful in treating dry-skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, calluses, corns and other forms of keratosis, monochloroacetic acid is often combined with 70% salicylic acid to moderate action.
Compound
Organochlorine compound – a carboxylic acid and hazardous alkylating agent – a colourless solid related to dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid compounds. Molecular formula: ClCH2CO2H
